residence
was
constructed
in
1909
for
Calgary
businessman
Bert
A.
Stringer
.
Built
of
brick
with a
sandstone
block
base
, the
hillside
house
featured
a
corner
tower
with a
bell-shaped
roof
. A
photograph
of the
Stringer
residence
appeared
in the
June
1910
supplement
to the
Calgary
Herald
entitled
"
Why
Go
to
Canada?
"
Stringer
was
heavily
involved
in
real
estate
investment
. He was
best
known
for
developing
Mount
Pleasant
and
investing
in the
construction
of the
Centre
Street
Bridge
.
Bert's
brother
was the
famous
Canadian
author
Arthur
John
Arbuthnott
Stringer
,
who
wrote
poetry
,
non-fiction
,
fiction
and
scripts
for
silent
film
,
most
notably
The
Perils
of
Pauline
.
Now
:
Private
residence
•
This
vintage
landmark
still
stands
guard
at the
gateway
to the
exclusive
Upper
Mount
Royal
district
. The
house
was
recently
sold
and
remains
in
private
hands
. A
portion
of the
signature
stone
retaining
wall
that
originally
bordered
the
perimeter
of the
21,000-
square-foot
property
and
wound
up
the
hill
along
Royal
Avenue
has
endured
the
passage
of
time
.
