403 – 13 St NW
[A Work Still in Progress!]
A mere stripling (compared to others). Built in 1912 at the height of the first major boom in Calgary, which petered out in 1913 and died by the time World War One had started. The outline of the original house is shaded in yellow on the accompanying Surveyor’s Certificate.
The design is very similar to other red brick homes of that era in the neighbourhood: the main floor housed the kitchen, dining room and living room, whereas the upstairs had the sleeping accommodation (originally 3 bedrooms) and the bathroom facilities. Total area per/floor was ~670 square feet, not including the balcony and verandah.
The house served - for at time – as the Rectory for St. Barnabas Anglican Church, located two blocks north.
Because of the spacious nature of this house, it underwent major rebuilds in the 1980’s and 1990’s to make it suitable for suites. The mid 1990’s saw much of the original (interior) character disappear as a new kitchen and two-piece bathroom were added to the back, as well as a large deck that stretched westward from the kitchen and was accessed via a sliding door. The additions are shaded in light brown.
The sleeping accommodation was reduced to only 2 bedrooms, as the wall between the two bedrooms facing the balcony was knocked out and the whole area made into one enormous bedroom which now occupies 50% of the upstairs. The bathroom retained the claw-foot tub, but a new sink and toilet were added.
In the latter part of the first decade of the new century, the house was occupied by a whole panoply of tenant…for whom I still get mail!
