I am 100!!!! Woohoo!!!
I was originally built in 1910, although when Janet Jackson bought me in 1998 it said I was built in 1914. So I am older that I thought! WR Stevenson was the first owner in 1910 and John Rowatt was the second owner, John worked as an office manager at Massey Harris Co. Ltd. The owners in between we are unsure of, according to some old neighbours there were some artistic hippies living in the house and then someone bought it to renovate it and to Janet’s benefit had to sell it again before he got to start!
1998 – Janet Jackson proud new owner…when I first saw the house I walked in and saw the original woodwork on the main level and fell in love instantly!!! The house was suited and needed a lot of work when I bought it but we lovingly restored it to a single family home. The day after I took possession my father was in here tearing out appliances and redoing well EVERYTHING!!! It was a 2 year process, but done by us!
It was an interesting journey taking out the lath and plaster (I was hoping to find $$$ but no…) I did find some newspaper clippings and other tidbits though. I copied some newspapers… and yes they were dated 19190!!! I found a letter, I didn’t put that in and an attempt at a poem. There were also newspapers from 1977 so that may have been when the addition on the back was put in, but I am just guessing!
It was also cool to see how trends changed from fir hardwood floors probably all glossy… they were then painted a couple of colours… and then boards were nailed down (think there was a sale on nails as there were quite a few of them!!!) and then either carpet or parquet flooring was laid, waiting to be torn up by me :) to go through all of the layers to restore the original hardwood.
I was so happy to find my home and I am so happy that it is 102 years old… I am still going to have a birthday party in 2014 as I was geared for that… if only I had stopped to find the date on the newspaper sooner! Then the next birthday party will be when I am 150 years old!!!
