Our house was built ca. 1912, at one point serving as a boarding house for workers. The family we purchased the house from in 1991 still used the original shed as a barn for goats and sheep, and the front yard was a rabbit warren. The house was in bad shape and most thought it was a tear-down. We like the classis one and ½ story style that lent itself to renovation.
We stated with a ‘house-smashing’ party. Brave friends equipped with hard hats and sledgehammers went to work; it soon became apparent that the job was bigger that we imagined. “Down to the studs” was the new mantra. Thus, we had a clean canvas to work with, and several original features shone out and were saved in the reconstruction.
During renovation, we met a neighbor who was born in the house 70 years prior. She was thrilled we were renovating. We are proud to have retained this century home.
