About

The Community Heritage and Family History collection features images and maps of Calgary and Southern Alberta which have been digitized by the Calgary Public Library.

This collection began in 1997 as a way to make the Library's excellent resources  available to the public online. Starting with 2000 turn-of-the-century postcards featuring scenes from early Calgary, many donations have since added to the array of visual resources available. Donations from the estate of Alison Jackson (1912-1987), City of Calgary Heritage Inventory, and from Judith Umbach (1947- ) have added a record of Calgary’s architectural history from the 1950’s to the present.

The Calgary Public Library’s history from 1912 to present is carefully preserved thanks to photo donations from many staff members and from the Library’s own archives.

In 2016 the Library received an exciting donation from the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation, with support from the DeBoni family. The East Village Story is an extensive collection documenting the changing face of the East Village community from 2007 to present.

Considered a historic treasure trove of early Calgary’s buildings, this special collection continues to grow and better tell the story of life in Calgary.
